Students helped decorate template birds to make up the Makarora flock (above). The flock will be displayed at various locations to raise awareness of endangered braided river birds and is hoped to grow as it travels. A follow on community event \u201cWelcome back the birds\u201d was held on the Saturday at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makarora.co.nz\/\"><strong>Makarora Tourist<\/strong> <strong>Centre<\/strong> <\/a> to celebrate the start of spring and raise awareness about threatened species, particularly those that migrate to breed at Makarora each spring but also resident species.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_795\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-795\" style=\"width: 2271px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-795 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/aspiringbiodiversity.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/flock2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2271\" height=\"1797\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aspiringbiodiversity.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/flock2.jpg 2271w, https:\/\/aspiringbiodiversity.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/flock2-150x119.jpg 150w, https:\/\/aspiringbiodiversity.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/flock2-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aspiringbiodiversity.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/flock2-768x608.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aspiringbiodiversity.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/flock2-1024x810.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-795\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Makarora and Haast School\u00a0 with their birds at Makarora School grounds<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Over thirty people<\/strong> (including residents from Makarora, Hawea, Wanaka, Queenstown, Makarora school children and passing tourist) learned about endangered braided river birds; wrybill, black-fronted tern, banded dotterel, black-billed gull and South Island pied oyster catcher which return to breed on the riverbed each year. These species are sensitive to disturbance and are vulnerable to invasive mammal predation from stoat, rat, hedgehog, feral cat and avian predators such as Southern black-backed gull.<\/p>\n<p>The Saturday community event also provided up to date information on <strong>Makarora\u2019s other threatened species<\/strong> such as <strong>rock wren<\/strong> and kea within the alpine environment, blue duck\/ whio within the upper river catchments and the forest birds and bats of beech podocarp forest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presentation on predator control programmes<\/strong> for Makarora threatened species was also part of the day and <strong>Dean Nelson from Twizel<\/strong> talked about the amazing <strong>Project River Recovery<\/strong> and what can be learned from this for Makarora.
